Natalie’s Success Story

photo of NatalieNatalie Skipp came to Gateway Hudson Valley in August 2022 and was assigned to our Health Home Manager.  At this time in her life, Natalie was facing homelessness and severe trauma from domestic violence. However, she was very determined to improve her life, no matter the hardships and barriers she might experience while working toward her goals.

Within two months of working with Gateway, Natalie was accepted for New York State’s Empire State Supported Housing Initiative (ESSHI) program, and she moved into her own apartment, where she continues to thrive. This apartment provides a haven for Natalie. When they moved in, she was so excited to decorate the apartment with family photos and make it feel like a home.

Natalie also began receiving support in our Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) program. PROS helped Natalie overcome trauma, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and set boundaries with the people in her life. She learned important skills that she believes she will use for the rest of her life.

Over the last two years, Natalie has transformed her life in countless other ways. In addition to completing the PROS program, she started trauma therapy and participates in support groups. She also uses kickboxing as an outlet to help her focus, regulate, and relieve anxiety. Her renewed commitment to fitness has also helped her to lose weight, improve her health, and boost her self-confidence.

In the future, Natalie hopes to work in the human services field. She plans to continue her education because she believes that when you see your life change, “you don’t stop there—you keep going!”

“I honestly feel that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t have the help and support from Gateway Hudson Valley and my case management worker.”
