CHARLES’ SUCCESS STORY
My name is Charles Hertica and I am a father, a son, a friend, and a lifelong member of the Hudson Valley community. As someone who struggled with addiction, I’ve seen how difficult it can be for your friends, family, and community.
I left a halfway house in June of 2022 and was given an opportunity by Gateway to receive supportive housing. I would like to be an example for people that recovery is possible and there are wonderful organizations that are willing to help.
Gateway’s Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative Program has given me the opportunity to get back on my feet and become the best version of myself. As a person in recovery, affordable housing and the support provided in this program has allowed me to accomplish more than I ever thought possible. During my year in Gateway’s program, I have become the Director of Administration at Samadhi in Kingston, I have learned how to be a successful grant writer, I have reestablished relationships with people I deeply care about, and have received a full scholarship through Bard College’s Baccalaureate program.
I have developed a deep passion for helping other individuals that have been in my position and it wouldn’t be possible without the compassion and assistance I have received. I would like to truly thank Gateway Hudson Valley, Mark Scott, and everyone else that has made this possible.
